Note: You must uninstall your old Scientific Atlanta cable modem drivers before installing the new drivers. Use Windows Add/Remove program selection. Uninstalling the drivers on non-XP & 2000 OS’s may require running the UNDPXALL.exe utility program. The UNDPXALL.exe is included in the download file.


Troubleshooting Tips

If your cable modem does not perform as expected, the following tips may help. If you need further assistance, contact your cable service provider.

1. Verify that the plug to your cable modem AC adapter is properly inserted into an electrical outlet.

2. Verify that your cable modem AC adapter is not plugged into an electrical outlet that is controlled by a wall switch. If a wall switch controls the electrical outlet, make sure the switch is in the ON position.

3. Verify that the Power and Status indicators on the front panel of your cable modem are illuminated.

4. Verify that all cables are properly connected, and that you are using the correct cables.

5. Verify that your cable service is active and that it supports two-way service.

6. If you are using the ethernet connection, verify that your TCP/IP is properly installed and configured.

7. If you are using the USB connection, verify that you have followed the procedure for installing the USB Drivers for Windows 98/SE/ME/2000.

8. Verify that you have called your cable service provider and given them the serial number and MAC address of your cable modem.

9. If you are using a cable signal splitter so that you can connect the cable modem to other devices, remove the splitter and reconnect the cables so that the cable modem is connected directly to the cable input. If your cable modem functions properly connected in this way, the cable signal splitter may be defective and may need to be replaced.

USB chipset driver updates

If use of cable modem through USB causes problems such as Windows crashes or freezes, you might need to update the drivers for the USB support chipset. To do this, you should visit the support site of the USB chipset manufacturer. http://www.usbman.com/ has specific pointers for ALi, SiS, and VIA chipsets: scroll down the left-hand column looking for the heading Host Type.

If your PC provides USB support with a VIA chipset (used on many Athlon motherboards), you might need to download updated 4-in-1 USB chipset drivers from http://www.viaarena.com/, and you might also need the USB Filter Patch from the same site. Another option to consider is updating the BIOS on the motherboard: visit the support site of your PC manufacturer.

Windows XP and USB sleep/standby problems

If you have applied all the updates and patches referred to the article on USB chipset driver updates, and you still get occasional USB disconnections, it is possible that your USB cable modem driver is not smart enough to recover after XP has put the USB root hub into standby to save power. (VIA users note that the USB Filter Patch appears to address similar issues).
If drivers and patches don't fix this, you can prevent XP putting USB to sleep as follows:
Right-click My Computer and select Properties (or open control panel System).
Click tab Hardware, click button Device Manager.
Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Double-click USB Root Hub (or right-click it and select Properties).
Click tab Power Management.
Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
Click OK to exit USB Root Hub Properties.
Click the red cross to close Device Manager.
Click OK to close System Properties.

Cable Troubleshooting Guide

This guide contains information for fixing issues with cable, mostly compiled from a friend who works for Adelphia cable here in New Castle, Pa. This guide will aim at resolving lost connection and slow speed issues by yourself. You should also try tweaking in addition to those suggestions. After going through the steps in this guide, if you are still having problems with your speed, you may need your cable company to come and replace the cable line from the pole to your house. The cable run from the pole could be damaged, old, or have water in the line. If you are still having problems staying connected after that it is most likely on your ISP's end. Contact them and have them look into the problem. If they don't resolve the problem in a timely manner, or can't, changing ISP's is usually possible. Anyway here are some steps you can take to ensure the best signal levels at your end:

Remove unnecessary splitters

1. Take a look at your cable wiring in your house. Trace the one that is hooked up to your cable modem to wear it is split at.
2. Find the wire that is coming into your house. It will be plugged into a spliter that slits the cable to all your tv's.
3. Go to Radio shack and buy some good RG6 cable that will reach your modem. Also get a splitter that says "IN" "OUT" and "TAP". Most cable companies call this a "DC" short for direct connect. Because when you use it this way it does not drop the signal level any amount of decibles like other splitters. Make sure it is a all gold plated one and goes up to 1,000mhz or better. When ever you split anything you want to make sure you get a good splitter with gold plating for optimal performance and good connection.

Once you have all the correct parts, follow these steps.

1. Get your main cable line that is coming in from outside and disconnect it from the splitter that it is plugged into.
2. Take your splitter the one that is labled "IN" "OUT" and "TAP" and then you are going to perform a "DC" or direct connect. This will be a direct connection staight to your modem from outside. Plug the main line into the "IN" and get one piece of cable wire long enough to go to your cable modem and plug it into the "OUT" and plug one peice of cable wire to where it says "TAP" and plug it into the main slitter in the house that goes to all your TV's.
3. Check your signal levels again and see if your signals have improved. Run some speed tests. If you perform everything correctly you should have a better signal level to your modem which will intern provide a faster more reliable connection.

Find your cable signal level

Many cable modems have web based self-diagnostics showing the signal leve. To find out how to access the signal levels on your particular brand/model, either find the manual from the manufacturer of your modem, or check the SG Hardware Database

For example, for the Motorola SurfBoard series modems, navigate to this page: http://192.168.100.1/ . You can post what your signal levels are in the forums, and someone can interpret them for you. Generally, power level should be between -5db and

+5db for best performace. That can tell if there is a problem on your end with the wiring and signal that you modem is recieving. What do those signal levels mean ? For diagnostic purposes, the cable modem can measure and report the Downstream Received Power and the Downstream Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). The SNR is important because if there is too much noise on the cable, the data cannot be decoded correctly, even with downstream power levels within acceptable limits. If the SNR is good enough so that the cable modem is working correctly, the exact power level, even if slightly outside normal ranges, does not matter. Downstream SNR: should be 30 dB or higher: the higher the better. As the SNR decreases below 30 dB, performance will steadily decrease, and errors will increase. The cable modem might stop working properly if the SNR drops below 23.5 dB. Downstream Received Power: the DOCSIS specification requires cable modems to function correctly with downstream power levels in the range -15 dBmV to +15 dBmV: power readings at or close to those extremes are likely to be unacceptable. However, when connected to a real-life CATV network, a cable modem might be functional over a narrower range than this. Accordingly, cable ISPs will specify an even narrower target range when commissioning their network: this target range will differ according to ISP. Target Commissioning Range Wider Working Range
NTL original areas -2.5 dBmV to +2.5 dBmV somewhat wider than that!
NTL ex-C&W areas -6 dBmV to -3 dBmV -12 dBmV to -3 dBmV Provided the Downstream SNR is acceptable, the downstream power should be satisfactory if your cable modem reports a figure either within these specified ranges or close to them. If a cable modem reports a downstream receive power of exactly 0.0 dB, this means that measurement of downstream power is disabled, and no information is available. In this case, you will need to judge downstream quality by SNR alone. Upstream Transmit Power: The cable modem's Upstream Transmit Power (or return power) is set by commands from the UBR so that the UBR hears the same signal level from all cable modems on that upstream channel. Because of different cable losses for each cable modem in the area, each cable modem will tend to settle onto a different upstream transmit power level. The better the return path is, the lower the upstream transmit power will be. The upstream transmit power will lie within the range +8 to +58 dBmV, with many ISPs specifying a target commissioning level below +55 dBmV. Values in the forties are the most common. Many cable modems are unable to transmit any more powerfully than +58 dBmV. One cannot tell how far this is below the figure that the UBR would need to see a strong enough signal at its end to maintain satisfactory performance, so a figure as high as +58 dBmV is normally a sign of an unacceptable return path. If other problem symptoms are also present, an upstream transmit power of +58 dBmV would constitute valid supporting evidence for requesting technical support from a cable ISP. The upstream SNR can be sensed only at the UBR, so cannot be discovered by end-users.

How can I view my Modem's Signal Levels, Firmware Version & Log Entries?

Some useful tips for troubleshooting a cable modem connection:

Most cable modems have built-in diagnostics for getting information on the quality of the cable signal coming to the modem. The procedures for accessing these diagnostics vary depending on the brand and model of cable modem you have. If the information below won't get you to these diagnostics, please contact the manufacturer of your cable modem (be it leased or owned). A few modems may have this information in the manual that they came with. For some cable modems, you can access these diagnostics even if the cable modem hasn't obtained block sync.

1) Try this first: Open your browser and navigate to http://192.168.100.1/ (or try holding SHIFT key and clicking the links). This is the most common method of accessing the diagnostics. You may need to navigate a bit from here to access the pertinent information.

1.A) For an Ambit cable modem, you may be prompted for a username and password. The username is root and the password is also root. Some Ambit cable modems have the information you are after on more than one web page.

1.B) For an ARRIS Touchstone TM502G CDV Modem, you will navigate to http://192.168.100.1 to view the diagnostics.

1.C) For a Motorola SBV5220, go to http://192.168.100.1. The username is admin and the password is motorola.

1.D) For a RCA cable modem, you may need to navigate to http://192.168.100.1/moreInfo.html to view the diagnostics.

1.E) For a Scientific Atlanta modem, go to http://192.168.100.1. The username is admin and the password is w2402

1.F) For an SMC8013 gateway, (Business customers) go to http://10.1.10.1. The username is cusadmin and the password is highspeed

1.G) For a Terayon TJ615, navigate to http://192.168.100.1 and type icu4at! at the password prompt (or copy paste it from here). To see the signals go to http://192.168.100.1/modemRfPage. If you cannot access the status page at http://192.168.100.1 (main menu) reboot the cable modem, wait for it to synch and then try. The reboot may be necessary due to the fact that the status page was an afterthought

1.H) For a Terayon TJ715, navigate to http://192.168.100.1/diagnostics_page.html to view the diagnostics. The password is icu4at!

1.I) For a 3Com cable modem, you may need to navigate to http://3comcablemodem.com or http://49.112.50.65 to view the diagnostics. A note about 3Com cable modems: they are notorious for reporting erroneous information, and sifting out the values you will be interested in will be difficult at best. Also, some 3Com modems will prompt you for a username and password, which are User and Password respectively.

2) If none of the above methods work, or if your cable modem does not have block sync, you may need to 'force' a connection directly to the modem. This is done by:

2.A) Set the IP of your ethernet connection to 192.168.100.254

2.B) Set the Subnet Mask of your ethernet connection to 255.255.255.0

2.C) Leave the Default Gateway and DNS Servers blank.

2.D) Reboot your PC.

2.E) Repeat step 1) above, as necessary.

2.F)IMPORTANT! Be sure to set your ethernet connection back to DHCP (Obtain IP and DNS automatically) and reboot when you are done checking the diagnostics or you won't be able to access the internet!
